The Jones Academy is an American Indian boarding school for grades 1–12, tribally controlled by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. It was founded in 1891 by the Choctaw Nation and is located four miles north of Hartshorne in eastern OK. The school’s remote location is nestled among 540 acres of rolling pastures and trees at the foot of the Pocahontas Mountains in Oklahoma’s Ouachita Mountain range. Admission includes travel, housing, and meals.
The project includes a gymnasium, cafeteria, dining hall, and recreation room. The industrial kitchen design with ample storage accommodates the staff as they prepare meals three times a day throughout the calendar year for the approximately 200 students from tribal nations across the US who attend the Jones Academy in grades 1st through 12th each year. Additionally, the high school regulation basketball gymnasium is designed for use as an auditorium/event space to accommodate 300 people seated banquet style. There is ample storage area for chairs, dining tables, etc. The recreation room accommodates students in their free time and holds large TVs, pool tables, and other recreational equipment. A concession stand is accessible to the students for use during their free time or on basketball game nights. The entire building has a backup generator to operate the kitchen, dining, and life safety equipment during power loss.
